Soka University has been ranked #1 in Japan in the "SDG 4: Quality Education" category of "THE Sustainability Impact Rating 2026".

In the SDG ranking of the "THE Sustainability Impact Rating 2026" (announced on June 24, 2026), our university was tied for first place domestically (ranked 401st-600th globally) in the field of "SDG4: Quality Education for All." This is the result of our achievements in nurturing human resources under the "Student First" philosophy since its founding, as well as our widely open education practices such as Distance Learning Division and public lectures, which have been highly regarded. In the overall ranking, we tied for 11th in Japan and tied for 4th among private universities (ranked 601st-800th globally).

This ranking is announced by the UK higher education journal Times Higher Education (THE), and it evaluates and visualizes universities' contributions to sustainability based on the framework of the United Nations SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) (formerly THE Impact Rankings). In 2026, 1,646 universities from 116 countries and regions worldwide will be included in the overall ranking.

Outside of "SDG4," in the field of "SDG14: Protect the Richness of the Oceans," the Faculty of Science and Technology's international research activities were recognized, ranking second domestically and tied for first among private universities (ranked 101st-200th globally). In "SDG12: Responsible Production, Responsible Use," our university's efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality in procurement and disposal were recognized, ranking tied for 4th in Japan and 2nd among private universities (ranked 201st-300th globally).

In 2019, our university established the SDGs Promotion Center, and in the medium- to long-term plan "Soka University Grand Design 2021-2030," we position the SDGs as a priority alongside education, research, and diversity. Going forward, faculty, staff, and students will continue to work together to further promote initiatives toward achieving the SDGs.
