■ Professor Yamamoto's comments
I appeared on NHK BS's "International News 2026" and commented on the upcoming UN Secretary-General election. Incumbent Secretary-General Guterres' term ends at the end of this year. The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly based on the recommendations of the Security Council, so the intentions of the permanent members of the Security Council are particularly key. Currently, there are six candidates (four of whom are women), including former Chilean President Bachelet, the country's first female president. So, will we see the first female Secretary-General? I hope the new Secretary-General will boldly push forward with UN reforms and work hard to mediate and achieve peace in order to resolve conflicts.
