Faculty of Education ・A paper by Prof. Hiroko Tomioka and Faculty of Economics Prof. Michiyo Kakegawa was introduced in the book "Education for Sustainable Futures: Global Citizenship and the Earth Charter"
On October 8th, the book "Education for Sustainable Futures: Global Citizenship and the Earth Charter" was published by Emerald Publishing in the UK.
This book explores the role of education in building a sustainable future through the perspective of the Earth Charter, and contains practical examples, research results, and theoretical discussions that show how the Earth Charter influences educational practice and policy formulation in various contexts around the world, such as Faculty of Education Latin America, East and South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Kakegawa of Faculty of Economics wrote and contributed one chapter each.
The reason they decided to contribute to this book was that Professor Tomioka Hiroko and Professor Kakegawa Michiyo participated in the General Assembly of the Academic Network for Global Education and Learning (ANGEL) held at UNESCO Headquarters in June 2023. During the session "Global Citizenship Education and Sustainability: Perspectives on the Earth Charter and Value Creation," the two professors presented practical examples and results of global citizenship education through Soka education. Mirian Vilela, Secretary General of the Earth Charter Secretariat, also attended the event and took a strong interest in the examples, which led to their participation.
The Japanese translations and original titles of the chapters written by Professor Tomioka and Professor Kakegawa are as follows:
- Tomioka, "Chapter 11: The Earth Charter and Value-Creating Education: From the Perspective of Global Citizenship Education"
 - Kakegawa, "Chapter 13: Education for Environmental Justice and Actions for the Era of Climate Emergency: Through the Earth Charter and Value-Creating Education"

Regarding the publication, Professor Tomioka said, "This time, I have considered the ideological characteristics of value-creating education and examined its commonalities with the Earth Charter from the perspective of global citizenship education. I would like all students at our university to read this book." Professor Kakegawa added, "I have been practicing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through my classes, but a major challenge is how to link knowledge to behavioral change. This chapter introduces examples of student learning and growth through the practice of Soka education, the principles of the Earth Charter that emphasize ethics, and the perspective of environmental justice, as well as examples of the social implementation of research. I would be very happy if this book serves as a reference for other universities and educational settings. I also intend to continue my research."
This book is edited by Dr. Namrata Sharma (a graduate of the Faculty of Education graduate program at the University of New York, currently at the State University of New York Faculty). Tamy Kobashikawa, a PhD student at the University of Faculty of Economics, is also one of the authors. The electronic version of the book can be accessed at:
