A paper by Prof. Junichi Kansaka of Faculty of Economics has been published in the international journal Cliometrica
Faculty of Economics Professor Junichi Kansaka's paper "Monetary rent and labor services in the manorial system of thirteenth-century England: an analysis of the hundred rolls of 1279–1280" has been published in the international journal Cliometrica: Journal of Historical Economics and Econometric History, volume 20 issue 1.
Cliometrica is a leading journal of quantitative economic history (Cliometrics), which applies econometrics to historical analysis (Clio is the Greek goddess of history). This paper analyzes how peasant rent in 13th-century England was related to the feudal system and communities.
Upon publication, Professor Kansaka said, "It is believed that peasants in medieval England were forced to pay heavy rents by their lords. However, in reality, the level and content of rents were decided through negotiations between the lords and the peasants. We have made this clear through statistical analysis of the data recorded in the Hundred Rolls. Currently, research is underway in development economics and Japanese economic history to reevaluate the efficiency of traditional agricultural systems. The paper we have published this time is also significant in that it places the agricultural system of medieval England within this research trend."
