Faculty of Economics Students of Shun Chonabayashi Seminar presented their research results at the international conference "NCRC" at Harvard University

From January 23rd (Friday) to 25th (Sunday), a team of Kimihiro Horinouchi (3rd year), Moemi Muragaki (3rd year), and Mika Kobayashi (2026), an international conference for undergraduate students held at Harvard University Faculty of Economics in the United States, participated in the National Collegiate Research Conference (NCRC) 2026, which is an international conference for undergraduate students.

NCRC is one of the largest academic conferences in the United States, bringing together students selected from universities around the world. The team of the Chonabayashi Seminar presented a poster on the theme of "The Effects of Tobacco Policies on Youth Cigarette and E-Cigarette Use, 2015–2023". We reported on the impact of recent policy changes on young people's health behaviors from an economic perspective.

At the venue, students and experts from Harvard and other world-class universities received sharp questions and advice on analytical methods and policy recommendations, leading to lively discussions.

Comments from participating students

In this research presentation, through questions and discussions from various perspectives, we were exposed to issues that we were not aware of, and it was a valuable experience that greatly broadened our horizons. I was also inspired by the fact that students of the same age were interested in fields outside of their specialty and actively asked questions. Unfortunately, I did not win the prize, but I am proud to have been able to present at Harvard as a student at Soka University. I will use this learning as an asset for my life, and I will continue to work even harder to contribute to solving a wide range of social issues not only in the economic field but also in the future.

Comment from Associate Professor Shun Chonabayashi (Supervisor)

In 1991, 35 years since the first lecture at Harvard University by the founder, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, I feel that it is very meaningful that our students were able to present their research at the university's international conference. We will continue to inherit the path to the world pioneered by the founder and strongly support students' independent exploration activities with the aim of fostering "global citizens".
