An interview article by Professor Fuminobu Okabe of Faculty of Law was published in the Spanish newspaper "BERRIA" (April 9, 2026).
Professor Okabe was interviewed by Spanish journalist Josep Solano several times about the current status and challenges of Japan's foreign acceptance policy, as well as the similarities and differences with South Korea's immigration policy.
In the interview, Professor Okabe expressed his recognition that "Japan has already been in an economic and social situation where it is necessary to seriously consider accepting foreigners, but due to Japan's complex historical background surrounding the issue of foreigners, full-scale discussions on this important issue have been delayed compared to other countries."
In addition, we discussed the impact of foreign admission on economic activities, working environment, civic life, culture and customs, crime prevention measures, implications from recent bold immigration policies in South Korea, and lessons to be learned from Spain's achievements in immigration policies over the years.
