Graduate School of Letters Professor Nobuo Kurata of partially translated 'Clinical Ethics, 9th Edition' has been published

The book 'Clinical Ethics, 9th Edition: Practical Approaches to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine' (Albert R. Jonsen et al., Shinko Igaku Publishing), partially translated by Professor Nobuo Kurata of the Graduate School of Graduate School of Letters at our university, was published on Wednesday, June 10.

This book presents a practical approach to guiding healthcare professionals toward more appropriate decision-making regarding the various ethical challenges they face in clinical settings. We cover a variety of cases, such as proxy decision-making and end-of-life care, and analyze them concretely from the perspective of clinical ethics.

In particular, this book is known for advocating the "Four-Box Method," which ethically analyzes cases from four perspectives: "medical indication," "patient intention," "quality of life (QOL)," and "surrounding circumstances," which has had a significant impact on the development of clinical ethics.

While Japanese translations of the 3rd and 5th editions have been published before, the 9th edition released this time has undergone significant revisions in response to changes in the medical and social environment and research progress since the 5th edition. Moreover, this book can be considered the culmination of nearly 40 years of revision work by the late Albert R. Johnson, the original author.

For this publication, Professor Kurata stated, "We have strived to make the translation easy for healthcare professionals to read without sacrificing rigor. I hope all healthcare professionals will pick up this book."
