Lecturer Taiki Sadakata of the Faculty of Education has received the "Japan Dewey Society 2025 Research Encouragement Award."
On Saturday, September 26th, at the 69th Annual Meeting (70th General Assembly) of the Japan Dewey Society, Lecturer Taiki Sadakata of the Faculty of Education at our university received the "Japan Dewey Society 2025 Research Encouragement Award." The award was presented on the same day by Chiharu Fujii, President of the Japan Dewey Society (Waseda University).
The Japan Dewey Society is a collaborative organization of researchers interested in John Dewey, a leading American philosopher and educator of the 20th century, as well as North American philosophy and education. This award is selected and presented annually by the society from papers published in its journal.
The paper selected by Lecturer Sadakata, titled "Creating Workers as Artists in Industrial Society: Focusing on School Education as 'Art' and Industrial Labor," examines, from the perspective of Dewey's art theory and aesthetics, what solutions Dewey intended to address the inclination of school education to vocational training in industrial society at the time and the problem of labor's mannerisms. As a result, it became clear that Dewey aimed to cultivate future workers equipped with imagination and aesthetic sensibility through "occupation" in school education. Furthermore, it showed that in industrial labor, he envisioned transforming labor itself into "art" by establishing a "cooperative industrial management system" that would allow workers to engage in productive activities creatively and wholeheartedly.
[Comment from Instructor Sadakata]
"I am deeply honored to receive this Research Encouragement Award. I feel that this is entirely due to the warm guidance and support I have received from many people, including my supervisor, family, professors who have supported me along the way, those who have watched over my research at academic conferences, and colleagues I have met through my research. I will use this award as encouragement to further develop my research in the future."
