Professor Kumi Ohno of the Faculty of Letters at this university has published a book titled "Unfolding the Secrets Behind the Plays of Eugene O'Neill" on September 24, 2026, through Osaka Kyoiku Tosho.
This book is a scholarly work that examines the world of Eugene O'Neill, a leading playwright of modern American theater and recipient of the 1936 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Japanese title is "The Unconscious Depths Lurking in O'Neill's Plays," and it focuses on the expression of the psychological depths and conflicts of human beings that O'Neill pursued in his creative work. It examines 12 of O'Neill's representative works, including "Anna Christie," "Desire Under the Elms," "Electra in Mourning," and "Long Day's Journey into Night," and discusses the ideas and views of humanity embedded in these works in English, taking into account their connections to psychoanalysis, Nietzschean philosophy, and Eastern thought.
Regarding the publication, Professor Ohno said, "In the 'American Theatre Studies' seminar that I have taught for many years, I have had numerous discussions with students about the intricate dialogue in O'Neill's works and the meaning embedded in each line. O'Neill's works are full of important elements for creating theatre. I hope that people will pick up the book and discover new perspectives on theatre appreciation and interpretation."
