About our Center for Supporting Students with Disabilities

Announcement of Name Change to "Support Center for Students with Disabilities" and Organizational Expansion

Soka University has changed its name and reorganized from the "Office for Students with Disabilities" established in March 2021 to the "Support Center for Students with Disabilities" on April 1, 2026, with the aim of further strengthening its support system.

The aim of centralization

Based on the consultation and support achievements that Office for Students with Disabilities has accumulated so far, the new system will provide more comprehensive support not only in terms of academic studies, but also in student life and career support by networking each department involved.

Those who are eligible for support

This program is for students enrolled at this university who have physical disabilities, mental disabilities (including developmental disabilities), or other mental or physical functional impairments, and who experience ongoing limitations or difficulties in their daily lives or university life.

About the Learning Environment Adjustment Room

The university opened the Office for Students with Disabilities room in March 2021 and started as the "Learning Environment Coordination Office" in 2026.

This office serves as a point of contact for students who require adjustments to their learning environment due to disabilities or other reasons. To ensure that students in need of support can receive the same educational and research opportunities as students without disabilities, we have counselors (clinical psychologists) on staff and work in cooperation with relevant departments inside and outside the university to implement adjustments to their learning environment.

We accept consultations regarding learning and requests for adjustments to the learning environment in classes and other settings. Please feel free to contact us.

About LEAD

The Center for Disability Services opened in March 2021, and is renamed as Learning Environment Adjustment Division in 2026 academic year.

LEAD serves as the primary point of contact for students requiring adjustments due to disabilities or other health-related needs in classes. To ensure that all students have equitable access to educational and research opportunities, LEAD coordinates learning environment adjustments in class. LEAD works in close partnership with academic faculties, departments, and individual instructors to implement the necessary accommodation for your success.

We accept consultations regarding academic concerns, as well as applications for reasonable accommodations in classes, labs, practicum, and fieldwork. Please feel free to contact us.

Basic principles regarding adjusting the learning environment

When a student or applicant with a disability expresses a need for the removal of social barriers, and the burden associated with doing so is not excessive, this university will endeavor to make necessary and reasonable adjustments to the learning environment in accordance with individual circumstances, so as not to infringe upon the rights and interests of persons with disabilities.

Target Audience

Students with disabilities enrolled at our university (undergraduate students, graduate students, special course students, non-degree students, research students)

How to apply

As a general rule, requests must come from the student with a disability themselves and will be handled by the Learning Environment Adjustment Office.

When applying, please submit your application via Google Form (①) and then prepare the documents listed in (②).

Reasonable Accommodation in Class

Basic idea of providing reasonable accommodation

Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments to the tasks, environment or to the way things are usually done that enable individuals with disabilities to have an equal opportunity to participate in an academic program.

Accommodations are reasonable unless they:
• Alter or remove essential requirements.
• Fundamentally alter the nature of the program.
• Impose undue financial or administrative burden.
• Pose a threat to others.

Who is eligible to receive reasonable accommodation?

Student with disability who are in undergraduate, graduate, “Bekka” (learning Japanese), undergraduate non-degree program, and research program.

How to apply

Flow to start reasonable accommodation

  1. Apply for a reasonable accommodation with a proof document to the Center for Disability Services
  2. Make an appointment with a support staff (clinical psychologist or social worker)
  3. Develop a reasonable accommodation plan
  4. Have a committee meeting with faculty, staff and the Center staff
  5. Communicate to the student via email for confirmation
  6. The student email back for confirmation or request(s) to reach consensus
  7. The Center communicates to the student via PLAS for final confirmation
  8. The student prints the support plan and communicates to faculty/instructors either face-to-face or email
  9. Reasonable accommodations start

Status of applications for reasonable accommodation

Soka University has established a Student Life Improvement Committee and has been promoting barrier-free access on campus.
Regarding building facilities, handrails, ramps, multi-purpose toilets, and elevators have been installed, and automatic doors have been installed at the entrances of each building for students in wheelchairs, and low counters have been installed at the windows used by students. In addition, we have secured parking spaces for disabled people and made student dormitories barrier-free, making it possible for students with disabilities to enjoy student life.
In terms of the learning environment, seminar rooms and classrooms are equipped with desks and equipment suitable for people with disabilities.

In order to support students with disabilities in their studies, our university has established guidelines to support students with disabilities and provides support.
The Guidelines for Supporting Students with Disabilities set out the purpose, support policy, consultation desk, support system, and the process for providing reasonable accommodation.
We have also established and published a policy for accepting students with disabilities.
