Student Life Policy

Student Life Policy

Soka University is a university with three Founding Spirit: "Be the highest seat of learning for humanistic education," "Be the cradle of a new culture" and "To be a fortress that protects the peace of mankind." These Founding Spirit are the foundation of the university and should be respected by everyone involved with Soka University. In particular, the main actors are the students, and it is of utmost importance that each and every student lead a fulfilling student life.
Therefore, we have compiled a "Student Life Policy" that outlines what we would like Soka University students to be aware of as they lead their student lives. This was created to encourage students to be aware of their mission as Soka University students, to enable them to study in a safe and secure learning and living environment, and to help them protect themselves and the human and material resources that surround them, such as their friends, family, the people around them, and their assets and possessions. Please understand this "Student Life Policy" well and abide by the university's regulations to lead a fulfilling student life.
Below, we will present the following in the order of "What is expected of Soka University students," "Things to keep in mind during student life," and "Rules, prohibitions, and precautions as a specific code of conduct."

1. What is expected of Soka University students?

What is expected of Soka University students is, first, to "devote themselves to academics" and, second, to "cultivate their humanity."
The first, "devote yourself to your studies," is your duty as a student. "For what purpose should one cultivate wisdom? May you always ask yourself this question!" - always keep in mind the question of why you are studying and study thoroughly. Acquire not only knowledge, but also a broad and deep education, and build a foundation for contributing to the happiness of humanity, the development of society, and world peace. This guideline asks you to devote yourself to your studies and to constantly question its meaning. And, "The value of life is born only in hardship and mission" - while standing on a high sense of purpose, endure all hardships, work hard, and live a life of mission that is true to yourself. It teaches us that it is in this that value is created. Let us keep these guidelines in mind and devote ourselves to our studies.
The second point, "refining one's humanity," is a must for anyone who pursues an academic career. It is not enough to train one's intellect; one is expected to refine one's spirit and humanity and cultivate a rich humanity. This means a heart that can feel the pain and suffering of others as one's own, and a heart that can share that as a human being. This also includes the warm tolerance that allows one to understand and respect various differences, the mental strength to use everything as nourishment for growth, and the courage to act for the development of society and the happiness of humanity. Let us cultivate such rich and excellent humanity.
To put "study first" and "humanity training" first, and to grow into a humanistic leader who can contribute to the happiness of humanity and world peace. This is what is expected of Soka University students, and it is their mission.

2. Things to keep in mind in student life

As a student of Soka University, you should be aware of your mission and keep in mind the things you need to keep in mind when living your daily student life: your student life on campus and your student life off campus.
It is important to spend your campus life as a student in accordance with the school rules, regulations, precautions, and manners during classes, practical training, exams, club activities, etc. There are many rules and considerations to be made on campus, such as attendance and assignments for studies, rules related to exams, rules for club activities, rules for human relationships between teachers and students, among students, and rules for group life. I would like you to look at your student life with the awareness that these are not things that bind you, but things that protect you.
On the other hand, Soka University students are not only students, but also ordinary citizens. Outside of the university, we are expected to behave honestly as ordinary citizens in order to be trusted by those around us. This means following common sense and the law, paying attention to safety and security and striving to avoid accidents, and not causing trouble or worry to those around us. Let's also fulfill the duties expected of us as citizens by society.
In addition, Soka University students' activities extend beyond the campus to include outside the campus. Soka University has a good tradition of actively engaging in activities and exchanges that extend beyond the campus, such as extracurricular activities, club activities, and volunteer activities. As Soka University students, we are expected to act responsibly in these activities as well. Let's make sure that our activities are accident-free and meaningful.
Let us always strive to maintain the dignity and elegance of a Soka University student, and behave in a way that reflects how we should behave as students studying at the highest educational institution for human education.
The key points to keep in mind in your student life are "no accidents," "compliance with laws and regulations," "safety," "health," and "dignity." To these, add "study first" and "humanity training," and lead a fulfilling and meaningful student life.

3. Rules, prohibitions and precautions as specific codes of conduct

We have compiled a list of rules, prohibitions, and precautions as a concrete code of conduct for all aspects of student life. Please check the content of each item, follow the rules, and reflect on how you should behave as a student of Soka University and behave accordingly.

On-campus: ③ Campus harassment

Our university has established the "Soka University School Corporation Campus Harassment Prevention and Countermeasures Regulations" and the "Soka University School Corporation Campus Harassment Prevention Guidelines." Our university is a humanistic university that upholds the dignity of life and respect for human rights. We do not tolerate any human rights violations, such as campus harassment, bullying, violence, discrimination, or exploitation.
Harassment is any verbal or physical action that goes against the will of the other person. Whether intentional or not, it is something that makes the other person feel uncomfortable, discriminated against, threatened, humiliated, or disadvantaged. Campus harassment includes the following:

Types of campus harassment explanation
Sexual harassment It refers to making sexual remarks or actions against the will of another person, thereby making them feel uncomfortable, threatened, or humiliated, and thus worsening the school or educational environment. This can occur not only in hierarchical relationships but also among friends.
Academic Harassment This refers to a situation in which a person in a leadership position uses his or her position to disrupt, harass, or bully students through their attitude, words, treatment, etc., thereby causing unreasonable disruption to education or research.
Power harassment It refers to a situation where a person in a higher position or status uses their position or status to continuously inflict mental distress on a person in a lower position by making verbal or physical actions that violate the person's dignity, or by obstructing, harassing, or bullying them.
Gender harassment Gender-based discriminatory words and actions cause discomfort or other disadvantage to the other party, and deteriorate the educational, research, learning, and working environment.

Campus harassment takes advantage of interpersonal relationships at university, so it applies to behavior both on and off campus. Be careful not to become a victim, and be careful not to violate the human rights of others with your words or actions. If you are a victim of campus harassment, consult with a nearby faculty member or campus harassment counselor (see the Campus Harassment Prevention Guidelines booklet and the Soka University website).

Sexual consent

The agreement that must be confirmed for all sexual acts is called sexual consent. Here, sexual conduct without consent is defined as sexual violence.
This includes not only rape, but also molestation, voyeurism, and sexual harassment on social media.
In reality, there are cases where resistance is not possible due to differences in physique or hierarchical relationships. It is also difficult to always express one's intentions.
It is important to understand the dangers and risks, but the victim is not at fault. The perpetrator of the act is responsible, so never blame yourself and take care of yourself. You can also consult with Student Affairs Department, Student Consultation Room, or Health Center.
Respecting sexual consent not only helps prevent sexual violence, but also helps us to understand others and respect and value ourselves.
Be sure to clearly confirm consent out loud to ensure it is given.

Campus: ④Basic policy regarding sexual diversity

Regarding diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity, currently, the terms LGBT (including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and other sexualities) are mainly used, but not all so-called "sexual minorities" fall into any of the categories of "L," "G," "B," or "T," and there is no need for them to fall into any category unless that is what the person wishes.
The situations in which individuals find themselves are diverse, with some having come out to those around them and others being unable (or unwilling) to do so, some undergoing treatment (physical or psychiatric), some being unsure, and some not wanting to seek medical treatment. In all cases, sexual orientation and gender identity are sensitive information, and it is necessary to respect the wishes of the individuals involved as much as possible when dealing with them.
Our university protects human rights and respects diversity, and has established the following basic policy regarding sexual diversity at our university.

Basic Policy on Diverse Sexuality

All human lives have equal dignity, and that dignity must not be violated because of a person's sexuality. In order to protect human rights and respect diverse sexualities, our university has established the following basic policy based on Founding Spirit.
1. Our university respects the self-determination of everyone's sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
1. Our university prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
1. Our university will strive to eliminate barriers to learning or student life that arise from sexual orientation, and will endeavor to provide necessary and reasonable accommodation.
1. Our university will strive to increase understanding of diverse sexualities.

In accordance with this basic policy, we are working to increase understanding of the diverse ways in which sexual orientation and gender identity exist and to eliminate discrimination and prejudice. At the same time, we recognize that sexual minority students may require special support in order to live their student life. Therefore, we are taking the following measures depending on each individual case.

Unethical business practices

Be aware of the methods used by fraudulent business practices to avoid losing your valuable assets. Be wary of easy, attractive offers, and be cautious when signing contracts.
In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in fraudulent business practices committed by students of Soka University. Below are some examples of such crimes.

A friend from Soka University invites me to a coffee shop, saying, "There's a great guy in his 20s who's making a lot of money. I want to hear his story, because it'll be good for my job hunting." At the coffee shop, a person in charge of explaining (sometimes a person from Soka University) comes and says, "You can make money by trading futures using an investment system," and shows me data on how much money he's made. Cases of binary options are also on the rise.
The purchase price for the USB memory stick and DVD containing the investment system is approximately 500,000 yen. After purchasing the product, the intruder is persuaded with the idea that they will be able to participate in seminars and expand their network. If the intruder refuses, saying that they do not have the money, they are recommended to take out "consumer finance or student loans." The usual lines used to persuade the intruder are "everyone is borrowing money," and "you can pay it back quickly if you make money from investing." When borrowing money, the intruder is made to declare false information, such as "tuition fees for a qualification course" or "expenses for studying abroad," to make it easier to pass the screening. After signing the contract, the intruder is told that if they introduce a friend, they will receive a referral fee of 50,000 to 80,000 yen, and encourages the intruder to solicit their friends.

The above are actual cases of victimization. Our university has rules that prohibit "commercial activities between students" (p. 15), regardless of whether they are on campus or not. Even "solicitation" acts are subject to "disciplinary action." If you have any concerns, please consult Student Affairs Department, not only to avoid becoming a victim yourself, but also to prevent any other victim from the university.

Types of fraudulent business practices The modus operandi
Multilevel marketing They tell consumers that they can earn commission by recruiting members while selling products, and they turn consumers into salespeople, selling products while increasing the number of members. Beware of sweet words like "anyone can make money" or "easily" by increasing the number of members.
Online shopping troubles There has been an increase in problems with mail-order sales of health foods and cosmetics, which advertise lower prices than usual, such as "90% off your first purchase" or "effectively 0 yen for your first purchase," but actually require regular purchases. Please note that the cooling-off period does not apply to mail-order sales.
Call sales They approach people on the street and ask them to fill out questionnaires, then take them to their office and have them purchase cosmetics or sign contracts for beauty treatments.
Appointment Sales They call or send postcards saying things like, "We need to get in touch with you urgently," or "You've won a special gift," and then try to get people to sign a one-on-one contract to purchase a product.
Pushy sales tactics They send you products you did not order and then ask you to pay for them. If you receive products you did not order, do not touch them under any circumstances. You do not have to pay for them. If 14 days have passed since you received the products, or 7 days have passed since you requested the products to be picked up, you can dispose of them.
Fraudulent sales tactics They may appear to be from a government office, and may use misleading language and clothing to try to sell you things like fire extinguishers, gas alarms, nameplates, etc. Be sure to check their identification and affiliation.
Qualification sales scams that take advantage of job hunting They try to sell you expensive textbooks and other materials, saying, "Why not get a qualification, as it will be advantageous for finding a job?" This is a malicious scam that takes advantage of students' anxieties. If you are going to get a qualification, you should carefully research the cost of the course or textbook, the payment method, and the content, and think carefully about whether it is really something you need. Unscrupulous businesses obtain a school's list of current and former students and call you persistently. Do not give an ambiguous answer. Clearly refuse by saying, "No, I don't need it" or "I have no intention of taking the course."

★Be careful of schemes that promise easy money.
★If you accidentally enter into a contract, be sure to take the cooling-off period.

What is the cooling off system?

A purchaser can unconditionally revoke an offer or cancel a contract in writing (by certified mail or registered postcard) within eight days, including the day the purchaser applied for or entered into a contract with the seller (the period may be extended depending on the contract). If the purchaser exercises the cooling-off period, they will not have to pay damages or penalties. These will be borne by the retailer. If you have any problems, please contact the Consumer Affairs Hotline at TEL 188 (you will be connected to the nearest consumer affairs center).

Lowering the age of adulthood

Due to the revision of the Civil Code, the age of adulthood will be lowered to 18 from April 2022. Although people will be able to enter into various contracts of their own volition without parental consent, they will no longer be able to exercise the "minor's right to cancel." There are also unscrupulous businesses that target adults who are no longer protected. In order to avoid consumer troubles, it is important to have knowledge and rules regarding contracts, acquire the ability to consider whether a contract is necessary, not enter into contracts lightly, and consult with someone if you have any problems. A consumer hotline called "188" has been set up as a consultation window. It is also important to be able to consult with someone if you think something is wrong.

Card Loan

Once you become a student, you will be able to apply for a credit card. People who start using credit cards often fall into the mistaken idea that they can buy anything without money. Many students end up in debt because they spend too much and are unable to make payments. Be careful not to get so caught up in monthly payments that it interferes with your studies. Managing your money properly is also an important lesson.

Information ethics and security measures

When using information or disseminating information, you must be fully aware of the value of the information, its influence, and your responsibility, such as who the information belongs to, who it will affect, and what results it will cause. Also, take security measures to protect yourself from attacks by others and unexpected accidents.

Illegal downloads
Even if you download illegally distributed music or videos for personal use, you will be punished as it is copyright infringement (※). Please be careful not to infringe copyrights. Even if you do it casually, the consequences can be serious. For more information, please contact the Copyright Information Center (http://www.cric.or.jp/).

Off-campus: ⑨What you should observe as a general citizen

University students are also residents of the community in which they live. They should follow the same rules as ordinary citizens.

noise

When gathering in large groups, such as at an apartment, playing musical instruments, or having a barbecue or fireworks in a park or by the river, be mindful of the time of day, volume, and impact on the surrounding environment so as not to disturb those around you. Also, talking loudly on public transport or in public places such as on the bus or train can be a nuisance to those around you. Always consider the other person's perspective and make sure that your voice or sound is not creating noise.

Fire Prevention

Be sure to properly put out fires in your apartment. If a fire breaks out in an apartment building, it could take the lives and property of many people. Check your fire extinguishers and fire alarms on a regular basis, and make sure you know how to use them so you can respond in the event of an emergency.

Taking out the trash

Students who live in apartments, in particular, must strictly follow the rules for garbage collection and must never cause any trouble to local residents. Also, please take any garbage you produce outdoors home with you and dispose of it. Illegal dumping of garbage is a crime.

Nuisance parking

There have been many cases of nuisance parking, such as people parking for long periods of time in other people's parking lots or convenience store parking lots without permission, which has resulted in the police being called. Please do not park in a nuisance manner.
