Message for my Parents - Hana Takeyama

    They always supported me
when I come across challenges I want to take on.

    Hana Takeyama
Faculty of International Liberal Arts (FILA), 4th year student

Throughout her university life, Ms. Takeyama has taken on numerous challenges, including academic pursuits, student council, club activities, studying abroad in Zambia, and seminar activities. Behind it all, there has always been the presence of her parents, who consistently supported her.
-What feelings would you like to convey to your parents now?
I think my father is a strict person. However, thanks to that strictness, I believe I gained a lot of learning and experiences before entering society, allowing me to grow. My mother always listened to my stories, encouraged me, and supported me. No matter where I was, her words always helped me.
Moreover, I am truly grateful that both of my parents never opposed me but instead supported me in everything I wanted to challenge. They also provided an environment for me to take on these challenges. Especially around my second year of university, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, when I consulted them about wanting to go on an exchange program to Zambia in Africa, they supported me despite various uncertainties. It was because of the support from my parents that I was able to lead a fulfilling university life.

-What kind of high school life did you experience?
I attended a prefectural high school that emphasized the importance of both academics and extracurricular activities. In the school's brass band, I dedicated myself to daily practices, and academically, I led a life of tackling numerous assignments always at the last minute. There were hardly any days when I wasn't at school, but it was a very fulfilling high school life.
-What has changed since entering FILA?
I've become more aware of my surroundings and can act accordingly. In high school and during my first year of university, I was always preoccupied with my own matters. However, through activities in the student council, friendships at university, and the support of my family, I gained the ability to act more flexibly. Additionally, throughout my university life, I realized that there is a lot of support from people around me, leading to fulfilling daily moments. Going through busy days and studying abroad has also made me more resilient, and I see this ability to not be discouraged by small things as a form of personal growth.

    -Reflecting on my university life...
Looking back, there were many challenging moments, but beyond those, entering FILA allowed me to have a diverse range of experiences during my university years. Meeting professors in seminars and friends who shared the FILA journey with me is something I take great pride in. Moreover, the fact that all departmental courses are conducted in English and the ability to take courses across various fields made it easier to explore topics of personal interest. I genuinely feel that these aspects make FILA a unique and wonderful place. All in all, I'm really glad I chose to join FILA!
