Soka University Basic Policy on the Use of AI in Learning
AI technology has been developing rapidly in recent years, and there are many different opinions, both for and against, regarding the use of AI in learning. However, it is inevitable that new technologies will permeate society, and it is predicted that in the near future, it will become common to use the products of AI.
Our university aims to develop "creative people," and places importance on students' independent learning, so the use of AI by students is, in principle, limited to the extent that it promotes independent learning. In addition, our university as a whole will utilize AI to an appropriate extent in the fields of education, research, and social contribution, with the aim of improving the quality of education, promoting research, and strengthening collaboration with society.
As we look ahead to a future in which the use of AI will be unavoidable, it is necessary for students to understand how it works, how to use it, and what to be careful about when using it. While generative AI can be a powerful tool to support learning and research, it also comes with ethical issues. Therefore, our university presents guidelines that students should keep in mind when using generative AI in their learning activities. Students should adhere to these guidelines and be mindful of the responsible use of generative AI. In particular, when writing class assignments or reports, please follow any instructions from your instructor in the syllabus or class and use generative AI appropriately.
It is important to remember that while it is OK to use AI as a tool for utilizing information to develop your own ideas, you should not use the acquired information as the outcome of your own learning. AI is merely a tool intended to provide information and inspire ideas, and the essence of learning is to develop your own thinking, creativity, and critical thinking abilities.
Soka University Guidelines for the Use of AI in Learning
