Graduate School of Letters

The Graduate School of Letters was established to embody the founding principles of Soka University through academic pursuits and education, particularly in the humanities and social sciences:

  • Be the highest seat of learning for humanistic education,
  • Be the cradle of a new culture, and
  • Be a fortress for the peace of humankind.

While the modern world has achieved material prosperity through the advanced development of science and technology, new challenges have emerged that threaten the survival of humankind. Questions regarding the significance of being human and of human culture, and the past and future of humankind, are once again being raised. In part because of these questions, the need for academic inquiry in the humanities and social sciences is also increasing.

The Graduate School of Letters aims to respond to this urgent need in the modern world through research and education in fields of literature and language, sociology, educational pedagogy, psychology, philosophy and thought, and history.

Overview of the Graduate School

In the Graduate School of Letters, graduate students are supported to understand and impart current academic knowledge, intellectual traditions, and wisdom developed and accumulated by human society. Our graduate students also develop the ability to apply and deploy this advanced academic knowledge in society as professional experts. In the doctoral programs, students are expected to actively participate in research activities to develop and create new knowledge and wisdom.

To achieve these goals, the Graduate School of Letters promotes advanced levels of education and research
