Financial Aid
Soka University runs a scholarship system for international (foreign national) students enrolled in the school in order to minimize their financial strain.
*From 2025 AY intake, scholarship system will be changed as the following section explans.

For Undergraduate Program Students

Soka University Grant for Undergraduate International Students from Designated Countries

Soka University will establish a program called "Soka University Grant for Undergraduate International Students from Designated Countries" from the 2025 academic year, with the aim of providing students from countries and regions designated by Soka University (hereinafter referred to as "designated countries and regions") with opportunities to study at Soka University.

  Korea, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar,     
  Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Uzbekistan,
  Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and all over the African region* as defined
  by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • Candidates
(1) At the time of enrollment
Number of recipients: All students who are admitted through the undergraduate admissions for international students and meet the eligibility requirements indicated below.
Amount: 200,000 yen as a lump-sum payment (one provision per individual)
     
(2) After enrollment
Number of recipients: Up to 30 students per school year and up to 120 students in total  among those who are enrolled as regular students in the undergraduate departments of the university and meet the eligibility requirements indicated below.
Amount: 300,000 yen per year (up to four provisions per individual)

 
  • Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants will be those who have been admitted to a faculty (excluding the Distance Learning Division) of the university, meet one of the following requirements, and have a willingness to actively participate in international exchange activities conducted by the university. 
(1) A person who holds a passport issued by a designated country or region with the status of residence as "Student" stipulated in Appended Table I of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act or with a status of residence such as "Permanent Resident," "Spouse or Child of Japanese National," "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident," or "Long-Term Resident."

(2) A dependent of a guardian who resides in a designated country or region and has the nationality, permanent residence, citizenship, or equivalent qualification of that country.

Soka University Academic Fee Exemption Scholarship for International Students

Screening of recipients is conducted before enrollment, and the exemption is applied from the first year.

  • Candidates 
International students who are/will be enrolled in the Undergraduate Program of Soka University, who demonstrate excellent academic performance and good character, and who are experiencing difficulty in continuing enrollment because of financial strain, are eligible.

  • Application method:
Candidates applying for the Undergraduate Admissions for International Students can simultaneously apply for the scholarship. Results for both applications are announced together. The length of exemption period is one academic year. Those who wish continuation must apply for it for each respective year.

Matters pertaining to both types of scholarship

  • The university accepts applications from not only international students with the student visa, but also Japanese national students dependent to a parent who resides outside of Japan and possess citizenship, permanent residency, or a corresponding right of that country or territory.
  • The scholarships do not apply to students who have exceeded the standard length of enrollment.
  • Undergraduate Program students are required to earn at least the following number of credits: by the end of each semester students should have obtained at least 15 credits the first semester, 30 credits the second semester (first year), 45 credits the third semester, 60 credits the fourth semester (second year), 75 credits the fifth semester, 90 credits the sixth semester (third year), 105 credits the seventh semester. 
  • The academic fees exempted in the exemption scholarship refer to tuition and school fees, and not applicable to the application fee, admission fee, registration fee, course materials, or Gakuyu-kai Club Association fees.
  • The scholarships are in the form of a grant, not a loan requiring repayment.
