New dormitory facility for international students to open in 2017

    This year marks the 45th anniversary since the founding of Soka University in 1971 and two new dormitories are under construction to commemorate the occasion. The new men’s dormitory is called Takiyama International and the new female dormitory is called Manyo International, both slated to open in March 2017.

    The new dormitories will house both Japanese and international students to encourage and facilitate communication among residents and provide them with opportunities to learn about different cultures through daily interactions. The university is hoping that such diverse living environment will help dorm residents nurture more global perspectives as well as help them lead more contributive lives fol-lowing graduation.

    Eight students will share a single unit, which will also have a communal living room to foster conver-sation and friendships. In addition, senior students will be acting as resident assistants and support new students.


    Takiyama International Dormitory (Facility for Men)
    Structure: Reinforced Concrete, seven floors, one basement floor.
    Capacity: 50 units, 400 students total (eight students per unit)
    Room Furniture: Desk, Chair, Bed and Closet
    Communal Facilities: Multi-purpose room, Bathroom, Lounge, Dining Facility, Shower room, Laundry room, Toilets, Living room and Kitchen
    Meals: Monday through Saturday (Breakfast and Dinner)
    Manager: 24-hour onsite
    Security: Auto-lock system

    Manyo International Dormitory (Facility for Women)
    Structure: Reinforced concrete, six floors
    Capacity: 18 units, 144 students (eight students per room)
    Room Furniture: Desk, Chair, Bed and Closet
    Communal Facility: Meeting room, Bathroom, Shower room, Laundry room, Toilets, Living room and Kitchen
    Manager: 24-hour onsite
    Security: Auto-lock system
