Akio Nishiura Seminar of the Faculty of Economics Wins Most Outstanding Award at the “9th Competition of the Consortium of Universities in Hachioji” Student Presentation Meeting

On December 9 (Saturday) and 10 (Sunday), the “9th Competition of the Consortium of Universities in Hachioji” Student Presentation Meeting took place at the Hachioji College Community Center (sponsored by the Consortium of Universities in Hachioji; supported by the Hachioji City Board of Education).

In this event, students from the 25 universities that participate in the Consortium of Universities presented their research results and ideas with the aim to promote academic-industrial collaboration and the revitalization of the community.

In the “Students’ Direct Proposal to Hachioji City Mayor! – Final Trial” (which serves as a forum to propose ideas directly to the Hachioji City mayor), held on December 10, eight groups from five universities that were selected from 30 groups from eight universities gave their presentations, and the Akio Nishiura Seminar of Soka University’s Faculty of Economics won the Most Outstanding Award, while the Hisashi Amagai Seminar of the Faculty of Business Administration won the Special Award.

The Children Group of the Nishiura Seminar focused on educational issues surrounding foreign-national children in the city, and presented under the title, “Our Protection of Foreign-national Children in Hachioji – Aiming to Promote Learning Communication Notebooks United as a Community.” Based on experiences of volunteering at several Japanese support groups in the city, the group proposed the introduction and usage methods of “learning communication notebooks” as part of an effort to protect and support foreign-national children via three entities, namely, schools, supporting organizations, and family members, uniting as one.

The leader of the group, Mr. Teruyuki Saito (senior, Faculty of Economics) expressed his appreciation to everyone that supported him, including Professor Nishiura of the seminar. He also shared the difficulty he felt in facing the educational issues of foreign-national children as a college student. He expressed his determination to grow into a person that can think critically and take action even after graduation so that he can continue to support and contribute to helping foreign-national children.
