Navigating Global Markets: A Practical Approach to International Business
USA, Class of 2021
Ryan DeVon Smith
Customer Success Specialist in Japan
I work in Japan supporting HR teams at global companies as they implement and optimize an e-learning platform—so employees can upskill effectively and actually reach their learning goals.
Why did you choose to study in the IBSP program at Soka University?
I chose IBSP for my master’s because the faculty had the kind of mix I wanted. Some professors had built careers in industry or consulting; others focused on full-time teaching and research. That balance gave me confidence I’d get both practical and academic perspectives—and I did.
The extracurricular side was a highlight. Company and public-sector visits in Tokyo showed me how corporate structures operate and how government departments conduct business. On campus, I never felt like an outsider. Even as an international student at a primarily Japanese private university, I blended in and made Hachioji in Tokyo my home for two years.
How has your experience at IBSP benefited you in your current career?
Before joining IBSP, I had 10 years of work experience in the U.S. The program taught me how to navigate international markets by understanding different business environments and adapting to various cultural expectations. It has helped me work more effectively with clients and professionals from diverse countries.
What advice would you give to prospective students who are considering joining IBSP?
I would tell prospective students to take full advantage of the program’s faculty and curriculum, which offer deep insights into Japanese business and culture. Participate actively in classes and extracurricular activities when available, and be open to learning from the diverse perspectives of your cohort. The Soka University campus is close to Tokyo, which can make your experience even richer and help your career. Finally, if you are accepted into the program, ask all your questions and try to join a cohort that is as culturally and internationally diverse as possible, so you can gain a true study and research experience in international business.
