Leading with Empathy: How IBSP Shaped My Global Mindset

India, Class of 2018

Somya Sinha

Senior Manager at Freyr Solutions

At Freyr Solutions, I lead the strategy for the company’s Japan business. My work involves collaborating across multiple teams to drive growth, improve profitability, and remove operational bottlenecks. I serve as a bridge between global and local operations, ensuring that business decisions are culturally aware and strategically aligned. Working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment requires adaptability, empathy, and cross-functional leadership—skills that were first nurtured during my time at Soka University’s IBSP.

Why did you choose to study in the IBSP program at Soka University?

I chose to study in the International Business Studies Program at Soka University to gain global exposure and experience a truly multicultural environment. The program’s unique blend of academic rigor and value-based education aligned with my belief in holistic growth. I saw it as a perfect opportunity to broaden my perspective, build cross-cultural understanding, and advance my professional journey in a meaningful way.

The most memorable part of my IBSP experience was the rich classroom discussions that exposed me to a wide range of perspectives and taught me how to balance them with my own thinking. My internship at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) gave me first-hand exposure to Japanese corporate culture, while my part-time role as an English language facilitator at WLC allowed me to connect with Japanese students, understand their culture more deeply, and bridge cross-cultural gaps. These experiences helped me develop a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and collaboration.

How has your experience at IBSP benefited you in your current career?

My experience at IBSP has been invaluable in shaping my professional journey. The program provided me with both academic depth and cultural understanding—two elements that continue to guide my leadership approach today. Learning in a truly global environment encouraged me to think strategically, communicate across cultures, and lead with empathy. The combination of academic rigor, cultural immersion, and value-based education has helped me become a more adaptable, open-minded, and globally oriented business leader.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are considering joining IBSP?

I would encourage prospective students to embrace the IBSP experience with an open mind and a willingness to step outside their comfort zone. The program offers not just academic learning, but a chance to truly understand different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking. Make the most of every discussion, interaction, and opportunity to engage—it’s an experience that will broaden your worldview and shape you into a more confident, compassionate, and globally minded individual.
