Student Voices: May

I entered the ILE: TESOL Program with an interest in teaching young learners and language acquisition. Coming from a Liberal Arts background, I had no prior knowledge in language acquisition other than my personal experiences as an ESL (English as a Second Language) learner. My peers also had diverse backgrounds, coming from different countries and various career experiences, which made every class discussion rich and engaging. The practicum resulted in a significant change for me. Initially, I was set on teaching young learners in the US, but working with my advisor and practicum partner to teach university students during the practicum reshaped my career goals. I decided to stay in Japan and teach young adults. As I continue my career, I see the impact that this program has had on my teaching. I still incorporate the teaching methodologies I learned from the program and feel confident in designing lesson plans and materials that are derived from my teaching philosophy. Additionally, I’m furthering my research from my Teaching and Learning Project on using picture books for language acquisition and intercultural communication. This program not only shaped my career direction but also deepened my passion for teaching!
