Abstract Historically, universities have often fallen short in their role of making significant social impact compared to industriesor scientific endeavours. The original purpose of universities, focused on knowledge development for nation-buildingand societal progress, has been overshadowed by capitalism and a shift towards prioritizing economic needs oversocial impact. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted this failure, revealing universities' inability to prepare society forcrises and difficulties when industries came to a halt. This underscores the need for a re-evaluation of the existinguniversity model, particularly post-pandemic, as issues become increasingly complex and interconnected. One majorcontributing factor to this failure is the neglect of community engagement, which remains a secondary functioncompared to teaching and research. This disconnect between universities and societal realities renders thetraditional ivory tower model obsolete. Universities must now engage, adapt, and transform drastically to remainrelevant.
