【FILA】Fieldwork in Malaysia Day 1 to 3

Here is an introduction to International Fieldwork Day1-Day3 in Malaysia.

The main program of Days 1-2 was lectures and discussions by Prof. Hanafi and Associate Prof. Haniza at the University of Malaya.
On Day 3, we finally visited Kampung Kerinchi, the site of our first fieldwork.

Kampung Kerinchi was established by Indonesian immigrants in the 19th century and retains a unique culture and lifestyle. In recent years, however, large-scale urban development has changed the face of the area, as buildings have sprung up and many residents have relocated.

The students from the Faculty of International Liberal Arts prepared for the trip by conducting group work on (1) economic and business issues, (2) social issues, and (3) cultural issues in the region. Then, each group was divided into groups to conduct interviews based on the research topics. We had the opportunity to hear directly from the local people in their own words about various issues related to the economic situation, welfare, culture, and livelihood of the relocated people, as well as their feelings when they were forced to relocate.

    Participating students said

"The community members were very kind in answering my questions, and I could tell that they wanted me to know more about them."

"I learned that the opinions and ideas of the people I interviewed varied depending on their age group, and that even the generation that settled in the area has different ideas."
