Why did you choose Soka University and FILA?

From a young age, I was eager to study in different countries out of curiosity and a desire to explore beyond what was available in my home country. I actively sought scholarships and opportunities to study or participate in camps abroad, though coming from a middle-class family made this challenging.
Fortunately, a friend of my father introduced me to Soka University and its global opportunities. I was thrilled to be selected for FILA, and with the support of my family and Soka University, I was able to spend my undergraduate years in Japan.
I chose FILA because it offers a broad interdisciplinary approach and the chance to explore
various interests before committing to a specific discipline. The program also includes studying abroad for two semesters, which provides valuable personal growth and self-discovery. To this day, I cherish the memories and friendships I made during my time with FILA.

What is the best memory you have about FILA?

My best memories of FILA is our final semester in the 4th year. In our last semester, even though we didn’t see each other much, we were all going through the same challenge of finishing our capstone projects. I spent countless afternoons and nights in the library, and I’d often see my batchmates there. No words were needed—we all knew exactly what the other was going through. Those times were tough, but I’m grateful for them because they brought us closer together in a way that only shared experiences can.

What did you learn in FILA?

I went with Politics/International Relations focus on my study. It is intriguing to learn about incentives behind each political actions and this course really taught me how to look for meaning beyond what we were facing. Both Prof. Lenz and my seminar-mates were also very supportive.
I like the challenge that FILA is a relatively new faculty. So, it needs sometimes to show everyone that we live up to expectations. FILA doesn’t limit on what is inside the box when it comes to career choices.

Please tell us your story after your graduation from FILA.

My graduation from FILA happened during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which turned my plans upside down. I originally intended to stay in Japan and search for a job, but the situation forced me to return to my home country and continue my job hunt from there. It was a stressful four months, but during that time, I had the chance to volunteer at an animal shelter in my hometown. This experience helped me stay grounded and focus on the present rather than worrying about the future.
One crucial lesson I learned during job hunting is the importance of believing in your own potential. Four months after leaving Japan, I landed my first full-time job as an Executive Assistant to the founders of a start-up MedTech company. It was a steep learning curve, being new to the business world, but starting as an assistant gave me the opportunity to learn from the ground up, which I’m truly grateful for.
I’m currently in my second role as an Executive Assistant at a global tech consulting company. While I’m enjoying my work, I also have plans to continue my studies in political science when the timing feels right.

Please tell us about your job.

As an Executive Assistant, I help keep everything running smoothly for our executives. I manage their calendar, organize meetings, liaise with clients and handle important tasks to make sure their schedule goes as planned. Think of me as the person who solves problems and makes sure everything is in the right place at the right time.

Why and how did you choose your current job?

Honestly, I kind of stumbled into this job, but it turned out to be a good fit. I wasn’t actively searching for this specific role, but when the opportunity came up, I decided to go for it. Now, I’m really enjoying what I do, and the people I work with—most of the time, it’s a lot of fun! The work keeps me engaged, and I love the variety of tasks that come with the job. It’s been a pleasant surprise, and I’m glad I took the chance.

Do you feel your learning in FILA helps you in work? How?

Yes, my learning in FILA definitely helps me in my work. FILA was challenging, but it prepared me for the real world, which can be even tougher. The program gave me the opportunity to explore my interests and find out what I’m truly passionate about. This has been invaluable in my job, where being adaptable and understanding different perspectives is key. FILA taught me to think critically, manage my time effectively, and handle complex tasks—skills I use every day in my work.
