Why did you choose Soka University and FILA?

I was drawn to Soka University because it offers the opportunity to explore a wide range of academic fields while studying English intensivelyIn high school, I developed a strong interest in international organizations and NGOs, and I was determined to master English during my university years. At Soka University's Faculty of International Liberal Arts, where all classes are conducted in English, I was convinced that I would be able to significantly improve my English skills.
Moreover, as I hadn’t yet decided on a specific field I wanted to focus on in university, the curriculum of the FILA felt like the perfect fit for me. The program allows students to explore various academic fields during their first and second years, and then specialize in a specific area through seminars and papers from their third year onward.

In addition, I was deeply inspired by the experiences shared by current Soka University students. I was particularly impressed when a senior mentioned that the university offers many opportunities to study educational theories and human philosophy while fostering friendships with peers who push each other to grow. Hearing this made me want to expand my own humanity and build lifelong friendships, which solidified my decision to enroll at Soka University.

What are your impressions of student life at FILA?

At the beginning, I was completely exhausted by the unfamiliar English lectures and the amount of assignments. However, it was precisely because of this challenging environment that I was able to deepen my bonds with friends who shared the same struggles, and I also pushed myself to expand my capacity.
In the FILA, I have studied a variety of subjects in English, including International Relations and Sociology. Gaining knowledge from diverse fields has helped me develop a multifaceted perspective on various issues. Through this experience, I was able to identify my own interests, and I am now focusing on Business Administration and Data Science. I feel confident that I chose my area of specialization with full conviction, and the knowledge I gained from different academic fields has been highly beneficial for my current seminar research.

In my second year, I participated in a four-month study abroad program in Canada as part of the Faculty of International Liberal Arts curriculum. Through interactions with friends from diverse cultural backgrounds and my host family, I believe I was able to enhance my adaptability and flexibility.

What skills have you developed by joining FILA?

I feel that I have been able to develop various skills in the FILA, but particularly my English proficiency and intercultural understanding. In my first year of university, I lacked confidence in my English skills and felt completely drained just from listening to a 90-minute lecture in English. At that time, my TOEIC score was in the 500s. However, through the classes in the FILA, my English skills naturally improved, and I was able to raise my TOEIC score to 930 and my TOEFL iBT score to 97. Now, I’ve also grown comfortable speaking English in front of others.
During my study abroad experience in Canada, I often found myself in situations where I had to let go of my personal assumptions and habits while living in an unfamiliar environment. Through these experiences, I was able to enhance my tolerance and understanding of different cultures.

What is your future plan?

I have so many dreams! While I haven’t clearly defined a specific dream yet, one thing I know for sure is that I want to pursue a career that contributes to society. Currently, I am focusing on studying Data Science and Business, and I hope to apply this knowledge to my future career. With an upcoming exchange program in the United States, I am excited to take this opportunity to further explore and clarify my future aspirations!

Please give a message to prospective international students!

During my junior high school years, I experienced a period of two years when I was unable to attend school and struggled to find hope for the future. For a long time, I looked down on myself, but things began to improve once I learned to accept myself just as I am. For those of you currently facing important decisions about your future, there may be times when you lose confidence. However, I encourage you to embrace who you are, love yourself as you are, and approach these challenges with a cheerful heart.
I look forward to meeting all of you at Soka University!
