On August 28, 2025, the Malaysia–Japan Dialogue: Bridging Culture, Sustainability, and Global Challenges was held at the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang. Professor Ichiro Sugimoto and Associate Professor Alex Chan of the Faculty of International Liberal Arts, both researchers at the Center for Malaysian Studies (CMS), delivered presentations at the conference.
The conference was hosted by the School of Social Sciences, USM, and co-organized by the Center for Malaysian Studies (CMS) of Soka University and the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur. It brought together researchers, students, and representatives from industry from both countries to engage in discussions on cultural exchange, historical linkages, sustainability, and the potential for industry–academia collaboration.

The opening session featured a welcome address by USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Azman Amran, followed by congratulatory remarks from His Excellency Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang. The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Nasrudin Akhir, an Affiliate Researcher of CMS, on the theme “A Historical Perspective on Malaysian Studies in Japan and Japanese Studies in Malaysia.”
In the five sessions that followed, Professor Sugimoto and Associate Professor Chan presented their research findings. In addition, Associate Professor Khoo Suet Leng of USM, also an Affiliate Researcher of CMS, highlighted the outcomes of her joint research with Professor Sugimoto and Associate Professor Chan on “Why a Satellite Account is Required for Malaysia’s Cultural and Creative Sectors?”
