【FILA】FILA Research Seminar Held

On April 17, 2026, FILA, in collaboration with the Center for Malaysian Studies, held a FILA Research Seminar.
The seminar welcomed distinguished speakers including Honorary Professor Hanafi Hussin, Associate Professor Azni Zarina Taha, and Lecturer Mozard Mohtar from the University of Malaya, as well as Ms. Puan Muslimah Saptuang, representative of the SEKAR ARTS GROUP. They delivered insightful lectures from multiple perspectives on Malaysia’s intangible cultural heritage, with a particular focus on the preservation and transmission of traditional dance.
The presentations addressed key themes such as the concept of intangible cultural heritage as defined by UNESCO and the potential of sustainable cultural transmission through educational tourism (edutourism). Emphasis was placed on the importance of shifting traditional dance from mere “appreciation” to active “experience.”

Following the Q&A session, participants were introduced to Joget, a traditional Malaysian dance, under the guidance of Ms. Puan Muslimah Saptuang.
Participants had the opportunity to experience the basic steps firsthand, gaining a deeper understanding of the culture through its rhythm and embodied expression. This session highlighted the effectiveness of experiential learning in understanding intangible cultural heritage.
The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding of Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and to reflect on the preservation and dissemination of culture within a multicultural society.
