Journey of Growth at SIPS: Developing Inner Strength through Self-transformation

Raissa Valentine Oey, from Indonesia, embarked on her journey with Soka University's Graduate School of International Peace Studies (SIPS) 1st batch in 2018. As a third-generation Chinese Indonesian, Raissa embodies the rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Additionally, Indonesia's national motto of "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" (unity in diversity) also played a role in contributing to her understanding about diversity and peace. Enrolling to SIPS was marked by challenges and inspiration. Financial constraints and doubts about her English proficiency initially held her back. However, her decision to challenge her own fears and enroll in SIPS was inspired by the Soka University's founder, Daisaku Ikeda, along with the encouragement and support from her friends and family. It turned out to be the best decision she ever made.
In SIPS, it was about resilience and growth for Raissa. Coming from a background in psychology, she faced academic challenges but strived hard to dedicate herself to her studies. She also persevered in working multiple part-time jobs due to financial hardships. Her involvement in various extracurricular activities and deep connections forged with classmates from diverse backgrounds leads to a profound self-transformation, emerging as a person of courage and perseverance. Also, the SIPS program equipped her with a broad understanding of global peace issues and honed her critical thinking and communication skills. One of her achievements is participating in a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) project competition which further expanded her career horizons and network. After graduating from SIPS program, she has worked on small campaign or social projects in her country. Currently she is in the final semester of her psychology studies, pursuing a career as a professional psychologist.

Raissa expressed heartfelt gratitude to her SIPS 1st batch peers and professors for enriching her two-year journey with colorful memories and meaningful experiences. She also extends profound appreciation to Daisaku Ikeda for creating a nurturing environment at Soka University, empowering youths like us to strive for peace and contribute to a brighter future. To future SIPS students, Raissa emphasizes the importance of embracing challenges and cherishing the transformative journey ahead in SIPS. Peace may sound big or abstract but please remember that even slightest action can change into a big thing in the future. SIPS is not just a program. It is a community, a SIPS family! She underscores the value of mutual support and camaraderie, encouraging us to reach out to one another and seek help or inspiration from seniors.
