Journey of Growth at SIPS: Contributing to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) through Education
Seiko Moriyama from Fukuoka, Japan, is a graduate of the 3rd batch of the SIPS program. Seiko’s journey to SIPS began during her study abroad in the United States in 2018, where exposure to Ethnic and Racial Studies, and Gender Studies courses opened her eyes to the systemic issues faced by minorities. Experiencing these challenges firsthand as a Japanese woman in both Japan and the U.S., she felt empowered to further explore these critical issues, inspiring her to enroll in SIPS to deepen her understanding and contribute meaningfully to addressing social injustices.
The SIPS experience, though challenging, transformed Seiko’s outlook and professional approach. Despite the language barrier and navigating unfamiliar disciplines of study like International Relations and Peace Studies, she persevered, receiving high grades, and even presenting her research at an international conference. This dedication earned her the JASSO Outstanding Achievement Award, along with full exemption from her student loans. SIPS broadened her worldview, exposing her to global atrocities and peace-building efforts that fueled her passion to educate students on complex topics such as climate change, gender, and economic inequality.
Seiko is currently teaching at Soka Senior High School in Tokyo as an English teacher, who dedicates her career to promoting intercultural understanding and tackling social injustice in the education environment. She also works with an NPO providing intercultural exchange opportunities for children. Her commitment to addressing racism through education is central to her current studies in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within higher education.
To current and future SIPS students, Seiko suggested that this interdisciplinary program will broaden your perspective, helping you critically examine societal injustices and discover your passions. Though challenging, SIPS will lead you to growth and triumph—stay resilient and enjoy learning at SIPS!
