Journey of Growth at SIPS: Cultivating Cross-Cultural Competence
Zhu Simo, also known as Grace, comes from Changchun in southeastern China. She came to Japan in 2018 to pursue her undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Law, Soka University under the English Medium Programs (EMP). Her growing awareness of global inequalities, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, sparked a strong interest in peacebuilding and human rights, especially concerning the lives of migrants and refugees. Inspired by this passion, she chose to continue her studies in the SIPS program to deepen her understanding and seek practical solutions for global challenges.
During her time at SIPS, Grace encountered the challenge of balancing her master thesis with job hunting in Japan, which typically begins a year before graduation. With the dedicated support of her supervisor, Professor Koide, she remained motivated and was able to navigate both tasks successfully. This period of growth in SIPS strengthened her resilience, research skills, and mindfulness.
Currently, Grace works at a German automotive company, managing the global supply chain. Her role requires seamless cross-cultural communication, an important skill she developed during her time in the diverse and international environment at SIPS. Working together with her cohort from around the world prepared her well for the realities of a globally connected workplace.
Her message to current and future SIPS students: “Embrace every moment, even the challenging ones. SIPS offers more than just academic knowledge—it’s a place to grow personally and professionally. Take advantage of the diverse environment, engage in discussions, and learn from those around you. You might not see the impact right away, but the skills and experiences you gain here will be valuable in your future career and life. Believe in your path and keep moving forward with curiosity and courage.”
