Student from Graduate School of Science and Engineering Receives Presentation Award at 23rd Annual Conference of The Japan Carbonization Research Society

In September 2025, at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Carbonization Society held in Wakayama, Tassapak Wutisirirattanachai, a second-year doctoral student at Soka University, received the Best Presentation Award. The presentation was titled: “Nitrogen Dynamics and Environmental Impact Assessment of Hydrothermal Carbonization Liquid Fractions from Mixed High-Moisture Biomass Applied to Soil.” This study demonstrated that hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of high-moisture biomass such as water hyacinth and digested sludge — which are difficult to process by conventional methods — can yield liquid fractions that function as effective nitrogen fertilizers when applied to soil. The findings highlight new possibilities for resource recovery and reducing environmental burdens through sustainable waste utilization.

In his acceptance speech, Tassapak expressed his gratitude: “This is my fourth time attending this conference, and finally everyone understood my Japanese (laughs). I would like to thank Professor Sato, my lab seniors and juniors, and everyone here today.” This award carries special significance for him. Two years ago, at the same conference, he suffered from a health issue during his presentation, making it one of the most difficult experiences of his academic journey. Since then, through steady self-improvement and with the warm support of his family, professors, and friends, he has grown step by step, leading to this achievement.

Reflecting on the moment, he said: “More than the award itself, I am proud that I was finally able to present as myself again. One steady move at a time” He also expressed his determination to continue striving for further contributions to resource circulation and environmental harmony.
