Ms. Yuka Takeshita Wins 2nd Place in Oral Presentation at International Conference CANVAS 2025
Ms. Yuka Takeshita, a second-year master's student in the Environmental Engineering for Symbiosis major, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, won 2nd place for her oral presentation in the "Biochar: Agronomic and Environmental Uses" section of the Graduate Student Competition at CANVAS 2025. Held in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, from November 9 to 12, CANVAS 2025 (formerly the ASA, CSSA, and SSSA International Annual Meeting) is one of the world's largest international conferences in this field.
Ms. Takeshita presented her research titled "Evaluation of fertilizer and carbon sequestration effects of biochar pellets." Her study focused on pelletizing biochar created from carbonized waste. By applying these pellets to soil, the research aimed to demonstrate their potential to suppress carbon dioxide emissions from the soil while simultaneously serving as a fertilizer. A portion of this research was conducted as part of the SATREPS-EARTH project.
Reflecting on her achievement, Ms. Takeshita commented: "This was my first time giving an oral presentation at an international conference. Although I was very nervous, I am truly honored to receive such an award. Being exposed to various research projects on biochar and waste utilization from around the world was incredibly inspiring, and it allowed me to re-examine my own approach to research. I was able to proceed with my research and participate in this conference thanks to the support of the SATREPS-EARTH project and the Sasakawa Scientific Research Grant. I am deeply grateful for their support. Furthermore, this achievement would not have been possible without the daily warm guidance of Professor Shinjiro Sato, the stimulation provided by my lab mates, and the constant support of my family and friends. I will continue my research on decarbonization and the effective use of waste, striving to contribute to society.
