SATREPS-EARTH Project Members Visit UNICEF Ethiopia Office

On March 10, 2026, 8 project members, including Prof. Toda (Theme 3; Faculty of Science and Engineering) and Prof. Takagi (Theme 4; Faculty of Economics), visited the UNICEF Ethiopia Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to exchange views on the utilization of spirulina and the future prospects of the project.

UNICEF representatives expressed interest in the use of EARTH-produced spirulina in school meal programs in Ethiopia, as well as the use of water hyacinth biochar as a fuel source for meal preparation. They also highly valued the potential of promoting spirulina in the country.

The participants discussed future collaboration, including the use of the project's pilot facility as a hub for technology transfer to local companies interested in spirulina production. UNICEF representatives also proposed a future visit to the UNICEF Japan Office to further discuss opportunities for scaling up and socially implementing the project's outcomes.

The discussions highlighted the potential for future collaboration with international organizations in advancing the project's outcomes.
