A research publication featuring a paper on Tsunesaburo Makiguchi by a visiting researcher at IRISE has been published

A paper by Masayuki Shiohara, a visiting researcher at IRISE, was included in Nitobe Inazo no Sekai (The World of Inazo Nitobe, Issue No. 34, 2025), published by the Nitobe Foundation.

This book introduces the life and achievements of Inazo Nitobe, who made significant contributions to the international community as the Under-Secretary General of the League of Nations. Each issue features articles and research papers by a diverse range of scholars.

In his article titled Nitobe Inazo and Makiguchi Tsunesaburo (Part One), Mr. Shiohara examines the points of connection and shared characteristics between the two figures, as seen through their 30-year friendship formed through local associations and other activities. He also highlights that the preface Nitobe wrote for Makiguchi’s Soka Kyōiku Gaku Taikei (The System of Value-Creating Pedagogy) was notably one of the longest among the many prefaces Nitobe authored.

The introduction to Issue No. 34 states that the article closely traces the activities of the two men during their time in Sapporo, and, drawing on extensive documentation, it pursues the idea that Makiguchi may have already been influenced by Nitobe during that period. It also states that the second and third parts will be released next year.
