John Dewey Research Center of IRISE held its first symposium in Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of publishing John Dewey’s book Letters from Japan and China

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of John Dewey’s book Letters from Japan and China, the John Dewey Research Center of IRISE held its first symposium online on December 20, 2020, with the theme – Dewey’s visit to Japan and China, reading Letters from Japan and China (1919-1920).

The American philosopher and educator John Dewey visited Japan in February 1919 and stayed for about 3 months, and thereafter stayed in China until 1921. At the symposium, Mr. Takao Ito (Professor, Soka University), Mr. Liu Xin (Lecturer, Beijing Normal University), Mr. Naoyuki Yamada (Assistant Professor, Kobe Women’s University), Mr. Masaki Onuma (Ph.D., Beijing Normal University) presented about the contents of Dewey’s letters to his family in America and discussed the historical significance of his visit to Japan and China. They also answered questions from the audience and it was a lively exchange of views.
