IRISE held its fifth seminar online

June 23, 2021

The 5th seminar of 2021 was held online.
Theme: What is Toda University? – The things Daisaku Ikeda learned
Shiohara Masayuki (Visiting Researcher, Ikeda Research for Soka Education)

The founder of the university has often expressed gratitude for learning from his mentor, Josei Toda, and in his speech at Columbia University, Teachers’ College, he said, “Ninety-eight percent of what I am today is all that I have learned from my mentor.” (June 13, 1996)

Josei Toda was a disciple of Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the progenitor of Soka pedagogy, and is an indispensable figure in tracing the history of Soka education. The question of how Toda trained the young founder is a key part of studying Daisaku Ikeda.

Visiting researcher Shiohara reported on what is known at present, about what kind of materials did Toda use to share philosophy with the young founder based on the materials available at the time. A lively Q&A session was held with the participants, making a productive and enriching seminar.

On the 5th of this month, Professor Shiohara gave his second online lecture at DePaul University’s Graduate School of Value-Creating Education for Global Citizenship, in Josei Toda’s Educational Philosophy and Practice course.
